Workshops of Interest to LPM Members:

MA-B1 Staying Well During Changing Times. Kathy Lautens, CCTELA co-sponsored speaker. This workshop session will help individuals to:

  1. Explore personal change
  2. Normalize reactions to change
  3. Assess and address ineffective change strategies
  4. Action plan for building change resiliency

This workshop will be participatory and interactive with a balance between individual reflection time, small and large group discussion/activities.

MA-B2 Changing the Organization. Joan McMahon, NCTE co-sponsored speaker, Towson University, Maryland When change is initiated in an organization, what happens to it in terms of interpersonal relations, intergroup relations, communications, decision making, problem handling, goal setting and work structure? Learn the predictable phases of the process of change for both organizations and individuals in them.

MA-B3 Meals for Good Health – An Easy and Fun Way to Teach Nutrition. Karen Graham, author, dietitian, and educator, Portage la Prairie. Karen will show you how to make nutrition teaching for your students (young to adults) fun and interactive. You will also learn about maintaining your own nutritional health.

MA-B4 Novel Studies, Comprehension, and Remedial Reading. Diane Brookes, Rraven Rock Publishing, Yellowknife. A chance to learn about the use of published novel studies, an overview of copyright law, and a chance to share tips with each other.

MA-B7 Videon “Cable in the Classroom” Wally Schmeichel, VideonCable TV, Winnipeg This session will focus on media literacy using “Cable in the Classroom.” A practical, hands-on approach will be used to present a sample lesson plan, which can be adapted to suit any level from Grade 4 to Senior 4.

MA-C5 Mother Goose Lets Loose! Terrie Moar, Literacy Partners of Manitoba/Bookmates, Winnipeg. This hands-on workshop looks at using nursery rhymes to create stimulating activities for use at home, school or family resource centre.

MA-C9 Winning Over the Hearts and Minds of Learners in the Content Areas. Christine J. Gordon, Faculty of Education, University of Calgary. On the basis of an expanded definition of content literacy, an expanded notion of “text”, and an emphasis on interdisciplinarity, participants will be encouraged to emphasize the aesthetic as well as the cognitive when teaching students to be content literate viewers, readers, writers, discussants, and lifelong learners.

MA-C10 Viewing and Representing – Some Practical Suggestions. Bernadette M. Phillips, St. Paul’s High School, Winnipeg. This workshop will present a variety of suggestions for integrating these language strands as we implement the new curriculum.

MA-D3 Making Change Work in the Classroom: Teachers’ Roles in Instructional Innovation, Laura Atkinson, University of Manitoba. Explore the results of a study of teachers’ responses to emerging changes in their field, the roles they take on, and how they integrate new methods into their teaching lives.

MA-D4 Computer Grade Recording for Novices. Dave Stobble, Garden Valley Collegiate, Winkler. Still punching numbers into your old calculator the night before? Interested in using a computer? Computer gradebooks will be demonstrated and discussed. Come and learn how they can improve your work and your English students’ learning.

Ma-D6 Incorporating an Aboriginal Perspective in S2-S4 ELA. Val Georges, Aboriginal Educational Curriculum Development/Adaptation Support Teacher, Winnipeg. Strategies will be shared in terms of content, process, assessment and provincial ELA outcomes. Participants will be given the opportunity to peruse relevant texts and examine resource lists.

MA-E2 The Writing Process – An Author’s Perspective. Diane Brooks, Raven Rock Publishing, Yellowknife. An overview of the writing process as used by a professional writer for stories based on real life as well as those that pop out of the “Imagination Box!”

MA-E8 Laugh with Language Arts: Meeting Outcomes with a Light Touch. Deborah Begoray and Ann Stinner, Faculty of Education, University of Manitoba. This workshop will present ideas for using Canadian animation to meet language arts outcomes through viewing and representing. Embrace change and stay well by laughing with your students.
