Parents, babies, and children win again

Congratulations to Lynda Paziuk and Janice Prochera of Thompson Reading Aides Corporation and to Marge Warkentin of Flin Flon whose programs received LPM Family Literacy Awards of $200. Lynda and Janice plan to spend their award money on a BOOKS FOR BABIES program, which they will launch on National Family Literacy Day, 2000. Mothers of new babies at the Thompson General Hospital will each receive a book bag containing a nursery rhyme book and some information on reading to baby. Marge will spend her $200 on establishing a READ TO ME CHILDREN'S CORNER at the Flin Flon General Hospital. Marge and some of the parents in her Read to Me Family Literacy Program will liven up a corner with a collection of children's books, a table, posters on the wall, and a supply of crayons and paper for hospitalized children.

Aboriginal Grammar and Spelling Game

Congratulations to Marg de Kock of Flin Flon who has invented a beautiful game with an aboriginal context. It's called KISTIKEWIN ITINIWOK, which means, in Cree, "Culture of the People”. The game can be played by up to four players, and is designed at a Grade 4 - Grade 6 level. Delegates to LPM’s Annual General Meeting in November had a chance to see the game, and Barbara Wynes has a copy of it in the resource library of Adult Literacy and Continuing Education in Winnipeg.

Family Literacy Day, 2000

Already, some of the people involved in organizing last year's National Family Literacy Day have been talking about getting activities planned for the year 2000. This year, we should have our National Family Literacy Day promotional material arrive early enough to get it out to you no later than mid-January. There's a neat poster which leaves enough space for you to insert your organization's name, and where your activities will take place. So go ahead and plan for January 27th!!

Happy Winter

A smattering of snowflakes came and went, then came again and went again in Northern locations during October and November. Yet in the middle of November we were still having an unusual hiatus from the kind of weather that Good King Wenceslas looked out on, on the Feast of Stephen. Skiers and snowmobilers were longing for that deep, crisp snow that they didn't get enough of last year. And just before Saint Nicholas' Day, it arrived. Now that winter's here, I hope you enjoy it!

Wow! Where does the time go? Only 20 more days till Christmas.

I would like to thank Literacy Partners for the wonderful AGM they hosted on November 27, 1999. As this was my first AGM I was unsure what to expect. Well, Marg, her staff, the board of directors, and presenters, give yourselves a big pat on the back. You deserve it. I was able to come away with valuable information that I will be sharing with the practitioners in the region.

I have started to make my rounds of the programs in the West Region. I will be contacting you soon to set a date to visit you and your programs. I have started to gather useful information that I will be sharing with each of the programs. I am putting together a “Tickle Trunk”. It includes activities that can be used in your programs: software, shareware, activity bags, lesson plans, and anything that you, the practitioner, would like to share with the region. It could be an interesting exercise that you use in the classroom, a learner’s story or project, a list of useful Internet sites, or just about any thing.
