A FLURRY OF WINTER ACTIVITY

1998 Activities have concentrated on meeting our grant objectives, as well as responding to the membership's request for outreach assistance to the greater public to promote adult education on behalf of the literacy community.
Highlights include:

>

Celebrity presentation of a commemorative jacket to Peter Gzowski, founder of the Golf Tournaments for Literacy. Mr. Gzowski was scheduled to appear at the McNally Robinson Bookstore to read excerpts of his latest book in December, so we capitalized on this opportunity to have the former PGI Chair Kerry Knudsen present him with a token of our appreciation for his outstanding contribution to literacy development. The PGI golf tournaments have raised over $4 million nationally since their inception, through over 100 golf tournaments.

>

Provincial Conference on African Youth and Literacy as a keynote speaker presentation and featured display on perspectives on literacy statistics. On Feb. 28 at the International Centre. Community leaders in attendance were very interested in following up on family initiatives, Youth Literacy Corps funding from NLS, and the Mother Goose model for their preschool children. The dialogue continues with this active group and the sponsors of the Black Youth Help line as well.

>

Delegate at the National Conference and AGM of the Canadian Alliance in Support of Native Peoples (CASNP) at Crossways in Common on March 1st. The focus was on aboriginal youth. LPM made contact with possible additions to our President’s Advisory Council, drawing from the powerful speakers from groups such as Aboriginal Youth With Initiative. Continued
