A few more concepts of interest to me which Dr. Sticht presented were:

  1. You must take what you have and construct new knowledge from it. You must build a prior knowledge, with the emphasis on build (constructivism).
  1. Marketing for adult literacy is very poorly done.
  1. The results of the IALS reports are often misrepresented. To be assigned to a Level 1, a person would be expected to have and 80 percent probability to perform the average tasks at that level. However, this same person would also be expected to respond correctly to 30 percent of the average tasks in Level 2 and 15 percent of the average tasks in Level 4.
  1. There are no technical ways to set standards for literacy.
  1. Don't take the pedagogy of the oppressed into the workplace or military or corrections.
  1. The ability to shift from conceptualizing to perceptualizing is very hard to develop, takes a long time to do, and is a very important skill.
  1. Literacy is graphics technology and language technology combined.

The 114 page Workshop Resource Notebook contains the essence of Dr. Sticht's presentation plus a biography. Hopefully, this notebook will soon be added to the LPM resource centre. Thanks to NALD and the Alberta Vocational College for sponsoring this interesting speaker.

Fundraising Opportunity For Literacy Groups

Reading's Fun Ltd. will be conducting book fairs this year at over 10,000 companies, manufacturing plants, hospitals, universities, military installations, and government offices. Some of their larger clients include: General Motors, IBM, Canada Post, CBC, MTS North West Company, CIBC and Revenue Canada. However, they offer this service to clients of all sizes, and it is well received by everyone. Hosting groups receive 10% of all book sales as a direct donation.

Interest in this event has been tremendous. If you have access to a high traffic area, you might consider using this easy fundraiser:

  1. Employees love it.
We come to your host company for one or two days and offer a wonderful selection of books. Our books are the highest quality and cover many areas including: non-fiction best sellers, cookbooks, sports, health and self-improvement, hobbies, nature, reference, children's educational books.
  1. Exceptionally low prices.
We buy 100's of titles of the best and most popular books in huge quantities and are able to pass along these savings to your employees. The books are generally priced at 50% to 79% off retail prices.
  1. We do all the work.
We run the event in its entirety. We even provide you with full color posters to publicize the event. There is no risk to you; we are completely insured.
  1. Funds back to you.
After the fair, we rebate 10% of the proceeds back to the hosting program or LWG.
