From the Desk of... Cheryl Campbell, President
Literacy Partners of Manitoba
The past year has brought some important and exciting changes in the
Manitoba literacy scene. Literacy Partners of Manitoba has undergone much
growth and development as we strive to increase public awareness while
continuing to support the incredibly dedicated and committed practitioners and
volunteers in the field.
Marg Rose, as Executive Director, continues to
bring boundless enthusiasm and tireless energy to the organization. Recent
accomplishments include hosting a highly successful visit to Manitoba by the
Honourable Senator Joyce Fairbairn and participation in the February's Freedom
to Read Week, with both events increasing public awareness of our literacy
organization. The office has undergone much change and has very recently been
required to move to another location on the same floor. I applaud the whole
office staff for their understanding and efforts to facilitate the move while
continuing to provide business as usual. Regional networks are strengthening
and continuing to serve the diverse needs of the various areas of our province.
In
order to keep this great impetus continuing, we need all of our members to
provide input, suggestions and commitment to the organization. One of the goals
for this year is to increase membership by 100% in this tenth anniversary year,
so recruit a friend or co-worker to join LPM. As the Honourable Senator said
recently "the issue of literacy is so deep and so broad in this country
that no one level of governement-or one sector in our society-has a magic
answer." We are all partnersi in this quest to see that every Canadian has
the ability to participate as fully as possible in our changing society.

Senator Tours 8 Literacy sites!
Literacy Partners of Manitoba,
I want to thank you so
much for all your hard work in putting together the whirlwind tour of
literacy programs in Manitoba. I left your province with a renewed appreciation
of the incredible dedication and commitment of individuals to the literacy
cause and will never forget my special time there. As a point of
interest, one of my interest, one of my colleagues, Senator Janis Johnson,
wrote me a note about my visit to the Children's Museum in particular. It
turns out that her sister-in-law is the Director and gave Senator Johnson a
blow-by-blow of our visit there-- including the tree slide! In addition,
Senator Johnson's father introduced the first Lieutenant-Governor's
Manitoba Literacy Award. As you see, we have friends in all areas. I was
truly impressed with each of the programs and projects I was able to
experience during my visit. And, I must say, that starting out with the "Freedom
to Read" Marathon at the heaven Art and Book Cafe really set the tone for
what was a successful programme. I want to offer special thanks to Marg,
Jasmine, LeRea and Linda for your professionalism and high level of
organizational skills. And I truly appreciated your personal assistance
during our time in the van as we sped from site to site.I am looking
forward to receiving a copy of the video and photographs that you mentioned to
Ted in your latest E-mail. All good wishes to Manitoba literacy workers!
| Sincerely, |
|
| Joyce Fairbairn. |
