Please send in the name and a brief description of a volunteer tutor who exemplifies the unsung heroes/heroines working for the unsung heroes / heroines working for the improvement of adult literacy in Manitoba. One winner will be announced on September 8 (International Literacy Day) from the rural area; another from an urban program. Deadline - June 4, 1997. NATIONAL ADULT AND LITERACY CORPS FUNDING AVAILABLE
Non-profit organizations working in the field of adult and youth literacy are invited to apply for project funding for literacy activities which:

  • develop learning and tutor training materials in English or in French;
  • initiate research into literacy needs;
  • demonstrate new approches to teaching literacy;
  • coordinate information sharing;
  • increase public awareness of literacy issue.


Activities and costs not eligible for funding are:

  • provision of ongoing direct literacy instruction;
  • activities which have already taken place;
  • annual activites;
  • capital costs;
  • travel outside Canada.


This is a joint initiative of the National Literacy Secretariat, Human Resources Development Canada and Manitoba Education and Training, Adult Literacy and Basic Skills Unit. Funding information for 1997-98 and application forms can be obtained from:
