exemplifies the unsung heroes/heroines working for the unsung heroes / heroines
working for the improvement of adult literacy in Manitoba. One winner will be
announced on September 8 (International Literacy Day) from the rural area;

NATIONAL ADULT AND LITERACY CORPS
FUNDING AVAILABLE Non-profit organizations working in the field of adult
and youth literacy are invited to apply for project funding for literacy
activities which:
- develop learning and tutor training materials in English or in French;
- initiate research into literacy needs;
- demonstrate new approches to teaching literacy;
- coordinate information sharing;
- increase public awareness of literacy issue.
Activities and costs not eligible for funding are:
- provision of ongoing direct literacy instruction;
- activities which have already taken place;
- annual activites;
- capital costs;
- travel outside Canada.
This is a joint initiative of the National Literacy Secretariat, Human
Resources Development Canada and Manitoba Education and Training, Adult Literacy
and Basic Skills Unit. Funding information for 1997-98 and application forms
