Literacy's Winning Teams

CANADA POST LITERACY STAMPCanada Post Corporation teamed up with ABC CANADA to promote its semi-postal stamp in support of literacy. The theme of the stamp, unveiled on September 9th at Canada Post's Flight for Freedom Awards, is "Literacy begins at home". The image is that of the hands of an adult and child working together to add the missing piece to a jigsaw puzzle. The stamp booklet focuses on family literacy and carries the "Look under LEARN" message. A booklet of 10 domestic rate stamps costs five dollars. The additional 50 cents, generated from a five cent surcharge on each stamp, will be donated to the literacy cause. ABC CANADA will distribute the funds based on population size in early 1997. An ambitious awareness campaign is underway to promote the stamp.

In Manitoba, Canada Post Corporation teamed up with Literacy Partners to celebrate International Literacy Day and the semi-postal stamp. Mr. Brian Garagan, Manager: Media and Community Affairs (Prairie Division of Canada Post Corporation), Gerri Garagan and Buzz Lamond showed their support by attending a gala dinner hosted by Literacy Partners of Manitoba. Mr. Garagan presented Literacy Partners with two framed first day covers of the literacy stamp and spoke of Canada Post Corporation's commitment to literacy. One of the first day covers was auctioned to help raise funds for the LEARN heipline. Literacy Partners of Manitoba is extremely grateful to Canada Post Corporation for the support and the goodwill they have shown our organization.

Meet the Challenge

On October 21, 1996, "Literacy is Everybody's Business Day", ABC CANADA will be asking hundreds of corporations and non-profit organizations to set aside their automatic postage machines for the day and lick at least one thousand literacy stamps. Literacy Partners of Manitoba has already purchased 1000 stamps and challenges others to do the same. Visit your Canada Post outlet!
