PGI Tenth Anniversary

During the evening, guests attempted the Canada Post Literacy Quiz. Try your hand at the questions that stumped all but two of the teams! You’ll find the quiz at our website (http://www.mb.literacy.ca) under “What’s New”. Send in your responses by fax, email or snail mail before the draw date on International Literacy Day, September 8, 2000, to enter a draw of a signed copy of The Morningside Years by PGI founder Peter Gzwoski.

Ducks Unlimited Teams
Hats off to the winning team from Ducks Unlimited: Jim Ingebrigsten, Bob Kindrachuk, Brian Gray and John Markowski

Entertainment

As required by the PGI formula, Peter Gzowski mandates that his tournaments include music, poetry and good camaraderie.

The Spittunes, a well-known Winnipeg recorder ensemble, greeted golfers at registration and luncheon BBQ. The Westgate String Ensemble provided music at the 19th hole. Richard Moody and his band entertained the guests with a mix of original compositions and jazz standards during the evening.

Publicity

On Tuesday, June 6, The Winnipeg Sun ran a half page splash page on the PGI, with four digital photos spreading the word even further about adult literacy. Since there are still $10,000 outstanding in receivables, final figures on the net proceeds will be released in the next issue.

Iolle Fabbro
Busy hands on deck at registration included Iolle Fabbro from the PGI National, LPM staff and Board and volunteers to welcome 142 new golfers

The Future

An injection of new committee contacts is direly needed. LPM will be approaching new potential partners to assist in this massive undertaking next year. Do you love golf? Have donors for prizes to help us offset our costs? Have ideas on how to make a golf tournament special? Call Jasmin 947-5757 before our first planning meeting in October 2000 to add your suggestions!

Hundreds of hours of preparation went into the making of this event. Thanks to all the volunteers who made it possible.

Sylvia ProvenskiPresident's Report

Well, summer has finally arrived! It hasn't been the warmest or sunniest summer yet, but it will get better. OK, so I'm an optimist.

This has been a very busy year for Literacy Partners. We have had several opportunities to meet with a variety of members of government to discuss some of the concerns expressed by our membership as well as the importance of adult literacy. We met with Jean Friesen, Deputy Premier; Dr. Benjamin Levin, the Deputy Minister of Education; Pat Rowantree, the Assistant Deputy Minister; and most recently with Tom Glenwright, Director of Community and Youth Programs. I believe our meetings were very productive and that the "voice of literacy" was being heard.

The fall will bring many new and exciting changes to Literacy Partners and to literacy in this province. Some of these exciting new developments will be unveiled this September at the Margaret Laurence Awards for Volunteer Literacy Tutors and Canada Post Awards which will be held in Brandon on September 9, 2000. Hope you can be there.

I would like to wish everyone a relaxed, sunshine filled summer.
