Subject

Subject terms used are taken from the Canadian Literacy Thesaurus and from the Sears List of Subject Headings.

Subject Browse

You may scroll through the subject terms or use the quick links at the top of the page to go directly to a particular section (A-Z).

The bracketednumber following each term indicates the number of records which it contains.

Clicking on a given term will take you directly to the corresponding short records.

Subject Search

Subject may also be searched using the keyword simple search or the advanced subject search.

Simple Search

  • Author

Use the author button on this page to search for works by a particular person (author, editor, compiler, illustrator) or a particular corporate body (organization, government department, etc.).

Personal names can be searched by first or last name. To narrow your search use both. These names may be in upper or lower case.

  • Title

Use this button to search for items by title and series title. You can search by full title or put in as much of the title as you know. The words may be in upper or lower case.

  • Keyword

Use this field to search for one or more words. The words may be in upper or lower case.

The words you enter will be searched for in several fields at once. The fields searched are: title, subtitle, contents, summary, subject, added entry.

    For example:
Search for the word frontier or the word mathematics by entering the word and selecting “submit search”.

You may enter only part of a word to search for it in all its forms. For example: web will find items with the following words: web, websites, Webster, webbed, etc.

For more complex word searches, use the words AND, OR, NOT

    For example:

    frontier AND learn
will find items containing both words

    frontier OR family
will find items containing either of these words

    frontier NOT space
will find items which contain the word frontier but not the word space.

If you would like to search for a phrase, place the words in quotation marks in the search box.

For example, “intergenerational literacy” will find items which contain the phrase “intergenerational literacy” but not items that contain the words “intergenerational” or “literacy” seperately.

Advanced Search

To increase the specificity of your search, use this option.

Advanced searching allows you to combine different kinds of searches.

For example, you may search for author and title at the same time, or, you can limit a keyword or subject search to works by a particular author.

Search Results

Your search will retrieve the appropriate records from the database.

These will be displayed as brief records: title, author, date, summary.

To view the full record, click on the title. A full record will then be displayed.

Please note that the subject headings shown in the full records are live links. Clicking on a particular subject term will display all the records which contain that term.

For example, clicking on the subject heading “andragogy” in the record for Adult and Continuing Education will display all the records in which “andragogy” appears as a subject heading.
