Menial No More: Advancing our Workforce through Digital Skills Webinar - Tuesday, March 20 at 1:00pm CDT
A recent discussion paper produced by the Ontario Literacy Coalition (OLC) suggests that as a result of emerging technology, consumer expectations, and increased global competition, jobs perceived as ‘low-skilled’ or ‘entry level’ need new kinds of skills – and that their economy may depend on the ability to train current and future workers in these types of positions.
Presented by Literacy Partners of Manitoba, in partnership with OLC, John MacLaughlin, Manager of Program, Business and Partnership Development at the OLC and one of the authors of the report will host the webinar and there will be time for questions at the end. With International Adult Learner's Week (March 24-April 1, 2012) around the corner, it is more important than ever to bring adult literacy and essential skills to the forefront in Canada.
Space is limited so reserve your seat at

Family Literacy Day - January 27th
Family Literacy Day was established by ABC Life Literacy in Canada in 1999 and is held every year on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in literacy activities as a family. Doing literacy activities in the home is important to a child’s development. Even 15 minutes a day can improve a child’s reading level and help parents improve their skills.
Here in Manitoba literacy organizations have come together to promote this day through the “Journey to Learning” draw. Just fill out a form available at any public library. Contest ends January 31st and winners will be contacted.

Premiers Council of Literacy Federation Award given out at the
Breakfast of Champions January 10th in Winnipeg
“Literacy skills are the essential building blocks for the development of a vibrant society and economy. These foundation skills are embedded in activities in the home, school, community and workplace”, said Graham Starmer, President of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, one of the strategic partners and cosponsor of the Breakfast of Champions.
In order to bring recognition to achievements in literacy across Canada the Premiers created a Council of Literacy Federation Award medallion in 2004. The award recognizes outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy. Manitoba’s winner, Michael Moore, was honoured by Premier Selinger at the Breakfast of Champions January 10th.
Michael Moore kept the seriousness of his literacy problem hidden from everyone. He developed day-today strategies, often saying ‘You do it, I’ve forgotten my glasses’. To become a bus driver he orally memorized all 75 rules and regulations. In his 40s Moore, claiming a visual problem, asked the phone operator to help him find a literacy class. He contacted LiteracyWORKS where a tutor worked with him for three years. With increased confidence and literacy skills, Moore is now pursuing a college diploma to becomecounselorlor, serves on the Winnipeg Transit Critical Crisis Team and volunteers with the local suicide prevention hot-line.
Moore is a fabulous example of what courage and perseverance can do.

A celebration of adult learning and literacy ~ LPM's Annual General Meeting
Our annual celebration of literacy practitioners and learners was a huge success! After the formal business meeting we awarded four regional scholarships to adult learners, as family, friends and teachers watched.
The release of another amazing issue of Write ON! magazine, with learner stories, could not have happened without the help of Board member Jim Lewis and his team, and everyone was grateful for their amazing work. Then, our Reader in Residence Flo Oramasionwu blew the roof off the joint with her amazing vocals.
Thanks to everyone, Board members, staff, learners and practitioners, literacy advocates and volunteers, for sharing your talents with us over the past year! There's a photo album of pictures from the event on our Facebook page that you can link to above. To see what else has been happening at LPM over the year download our 2010-2011 Annual Report HERE.
