Be a volunteer tutor!
|
September is the month that Literacy Partners appeals to the citizens of Winnipeg to volunteer as a tutor at an adult literacy program. Most tutors volunteer for one or two sessions (3 hours each) a week from October to the end of May.
Working with adult learners is a very rewarding experience. They are eager to learn and have overcome incredible hurdles to be in a program. More... |
Plain Language Institute
|
LPM inaugurated a new feature this summer -- a Plain Language Institute.
During the week of August 11 - 15, four courses in Plain Language writing were presented. Communicators from Manitoba Hydro, the Dept of Labour, the United Way and other smaller agencies learned how to write in Plain Language. Two new courses were introduced. Altogether more than 20 writers participated.
LPM is pleased to welcome Alexa Campbell into our group as a presenter and consultant on Plain Language. Alexa brings a wealth of experience as an instructor in Red River Community College’s Technical Writing faculty. Her Writing for the Web workshop helped writers to use Plain Language on web pages and examine pitfalls and opportunities for effective web page design. Charles Moody, our PL guru, was back in Winnipeg to present his Introduction to Plain Language course as well as to add his new Advanced Plain Language Techniques program. All workshops were well attended and highly rated by participants.
We hope to make The Institute for Plain Language an ongoing feature of summers at LPM. |
What's new at our Resource Library
 |
It’s still summer so I hope you will all enjoy what’s left. That said, it is time to start thinking about beginning a new school year. My hours should return to the usual Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons but stay tuned to our website and the e-newsletters to keep up to date.
There is still time to answer our Questions to wonder about. Now that programs will be opening again, why not send in your answers and take home a prize?
PLEASE REMEMBER . . . there are no correct answers … we just want to hear from you. The questions are on our website home page with the instructions for how to do this. Send in your answers and attend our Open House on September 8 to collect your prize!

Raise-A-Reader
|
On September 24, it will be Canwest Raise-a-Reader Day across Canada.
On that day, the Literacy Partners staff, board and others will hawk special edition Free Press newspapers at the corner of Goulet and Tache. Other locations throughout Winnipeg are manned by volunteers from various corporations, the Winnipeg Public Library, and many other organizations. All the teams form a friendly competition with each other to raise the most money. All the money raised go towards family literacy programs and distributed by Literacy Partners.
If you would like to volunteer and come have fun with us on our corner,
please contact us at 947-5757! |

Learner Speakers' Bureau
 |
Our Learner Speaker’s Bureau is growing. Twelve learners graduated from the Learner Speakers’ training held this March in Winnipeg. One learner from Flin Flon received her certificate at the Pan Canadian Literacy Forum in April. Another five learners graduated from training held in Selkirk in May (four from Selkirk and one from Portage la Prairie).
Ten of our recent graduates have agreed to participate in further training. They are eager to speak out about the need for literacy programs by telling their learning journey stories. The new group joins an active alumnus of eight speakers.
The Learner Speakers are looking for new venues to share their stories. They would like to motivate potential adult learners to attend a literacy programs in their neighborhood. Each of the speakers has an incredible story about overcoming challenges to share.
