Family Literacy Day Event a Success

LPM celebrated Family Literacy Day at Kildonan Place Shopping Centre on January 27, 2009

Highlights Included:

  • The Story Fairy dazzled children and grown-ups alike.
  • Word Monster wandered the mall, giving out bookmarks, balloons, and pencils.
  • Practitioners from 7 programs distributed information about their programs.
  • Learners from Elmwood GOAL and the Aboriginal Centre participated.
  • Practitioners and learners who were at this event are entered into a draw (at our Practitioner Breakfast on January 30).
  • SHAW TV (Channel 9) filmed all the literary action.

Thanks to everyone who made this event such fun!

 


Call for Proposals: Community-based Adult Literacy and Essential Skills

The Office of Literacy and Essential Skills invites proposals for funding for community-based projects addressing the literacy and essential skills of adults. Projects must clearly lead to one or more of the following objectives:

  • Employability: Improve the literacy and essential skills of adults to obtain jobs and/or to improve their employment prospects; and/or
  • Community Participation: Improve the literacy and essential skills of adults so they are better able to participate in their communities; and/or
  • Family: Improve the Literacy and Essential Skills of adults so they are better able to contribute to their families.

Deadline: March 13, 2009, 4:00 p.m. (EDT )

The Office of Literacy and Essential Skills invites proposals for funding

Proposals must be for projects that clearly lead to one or more of the following objectives:

  • helping Aboriginal adults to build the literacy and essential skills, in English or in French, they need to get a job, and/or adapt and succeed in the labour market; and/or
  • helping Aboriginal adults to build the literacy and essential skills, in English or in French, they need to contribute to their families and communities.

Upcoming Plain Language Workshops

Literacy Partners of Manitoba will offer its next Introduction to Plain Language workshops on April 1st and 2nd, 2009

Charles Moody, one of the foremost Plain Language experts in Canada, is returning to Winnipeg to present four - 3 hour workshops to develop skills and confidence in Plain Language writing. The two day course costs $495.

Wednesday, April 1 (9am—4pm):

Morning Session: Introducing the principles of Plain Language and clear layout.
Afternoon Session: Applying the principles of Plain Language everyday, using the main tricks of the trade.

Thursday, April 2 (9am— 4 pm):

Morning Session: Building your practical skills using Plain Language.
Afternoon Session: Taking skills to the next level: practice makes perfect

Winnipeg Public Library Board Language and Literacy Grants

The 2009 Winnipeg Public Library Board Language and Literacy Grants are accepting submissions

Three $1000 grants are available to assist community groups in Winnipeg in developing language and literacy partnerships with one or more Winnipeg Public Library branches. Application deadline is March 27, 2009.
