LPM's "Going to the Doctor" Going International
Literacy and health reader requested by a literacy coordinator in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Ranjith Clarance saw that the little book may be useful in helping low literate people in his region to become less fearful of getting medical help. There, as here, low literate people are often intimidated, confused or fearful of hospitals and clinics. They tend to wait until health conditions are almost untreatable. Going to the Doctor is one way for instructors to help learner understand more about health and the health system.
This is another example where Literacy Partners’ Plain Language materials are being accessed by a world-wide audience online. About 1500 documents LPM resources are downloaded every month, most by users in other countries.
We wish Mr. Clarance good luck in his endeavour to translate the booklet and use it to promote better health in Sri Lanka. We wish also that more health officials would use the book here! |

Canada's Literacy Movement is 150 Years Old
By Carol Goar
The Toronto Star, Mar 04, 2009 04:30 AM
Canada's literacy movement is 150 years old.
It has withstood economic storms, hostile governments and overbearing educators. It has managed without money, facilities or paid staff. It has taken root in unlikely places and thrived in hard times.
"We have a long, rich, proud history," said Allan Quigley, one of the country's leading champions of adult education. "But guess what? We're still in church basements."
Carol Goar's column appears in the Toronto Star on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
