Manitoba Hydro tees it up for Peter Gzowski Golf Invitational

Great News! Manitoba Hydro is back as a main sponsor of the PGI Tournament.

This year's tournament will be held at the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club on June 22, 2009.

The PGI golf tournament was Peter Gzowski's dream to ensure that there was enough support in place so that everyone has an opportunity to learn to read no matter what age they are.

Our goal this year is to have fun, network and raise a lot of money for literacy. The proceeds from this program will support literacy learners in Manitoba.

Register by May 22 to be entered into the early bird draw. The early bird winners – four golfers - will receive an hour of instruction from Elmhurst’s golf pro before the PGI on June 22.

Learner Speakers’ Bureau - Training 2009

Fourteen literacy learners; fourteen stunning speeches.

This year fourteen adult learners from nine different programs wrote and shared their literacy stories. The speeches were powerful.

We had our biggest graduation ceremony yet, with dozens of teachers, family members, and friends attending.

Here are a few items from our collection that may be of interest.

Reading, writing, and rummy by Margie Golick

Why can’t a page of arithmetic be as compelling as a hand of Black Jack? Find out how this child psychologist uses a simple deck of cards as an effective educational tool. This book includes more than 100 card games to develop language, social skills, number concepts, and problem solving strategies. Learn how to use card games as part of the assessment process. With all the skills that can be developed through educating with card games, “perhaps more important than the skills learned are the values learned –- sharing, waiting, taking turns, and learning to lose.”

Real numbers by Allan D. Suter

All aspects of arithmetic continue to be important in daily life. Basic calculations have not changed over the decades. This is one of our resources that teach learners how to figure out the cost of groceries, quantities of building materials, and distances to travel. More specific types of math included in this series are algebra and geometry. The instruction is only the basics of these more technical math skills. This publication by Contemporary Books helps students learn to reason and to solve problems they encounter in school and daily life.

English at work by Deborah Barndt, Project Coordinator

This resource is designed to be part of your preparation for classes in various workplaces. The focus is on basic communication and problem-solving skills as well as on reading and writing. Learn how the workers you will teach may become your teachers as you identify the needs, problems, and solutions in their workplaces. The ultimate objective of this tool is to encourage you to make your own tools with creative adaptations of this material and the ideas suggested. Many of the activities in this resource are also appropriate for literacy and adult basic education classes.
