The LPM Northern Tour

In May, LPM staff was able to get out into the northern and western parts of province to meet our members and hear what they are thinking!

It was a pleasure to reconnect with so many dedicated literacy activists and to discuss pressing literacy concerns. One can be proud of the commitment and enthusiasm displayed by ALP, ALC, and college staffs.

Thanks to all of the participants in our focus groups. We stand in awe of the life changing work you do and the sacrifices you make on behalf of Manitoba’s adult learners.

Good Health through Literacy

Good Health through Literacy!

A few weeks ago, Debra Litkowich, LPM’s ever vigilant resource coordinator, noticed Karen Graham’s “Meals for Good Health Cookbook”, sitting on a shelf in our library. This beautiful Manitoba publication contains Heart Smart and diabetic-friendly recipes.

She decided to put out an offer to literacy programs to see if anyone would like to do a bulk order. The result was immediate and positive. To date 28 copies have been ordered at a reduced rate.

Thanks to those practitioners and coordinators who will use this fine book to help teach nutrition and health in their programs. The language level is appropriate for most learners, the photos are wonderful (and accurate), and the recipes taste great.

We have been discussing the possibility of doing more of this sort of bulk ordering in the future. If you can offer suggestions or recommend publishers, please call or e-mail Debra (954-3854 or liblpm@mb.literacy.ca).

Here are some books that may interest you:

Going west

This is a recollection about an important time in Canadian history. Many immigrants came to western Canada between 1885 and 1914. The Canadian Pacific Railway was completed in 1885. In 1914, the first World War started. Read about life during these years as written in the journal of an immigrant to Canada. Discover a “never-fail recipe” for pastry!

ESL literacy instruction by Lee Gunderson

This is a comprehensive and practical resource that presents theory-driven heuristics to plan, design, and implement reading programs for students of all ages and abilities. It includes discussions of reading programs and specific teaching methods for instruction models from primary to adult levels. Gunderson provides general guidelines for assessing literacy levels to match with appropriate programs and more. What better choice for your summer reading list!

Workforce: building success a Steck-Vaughn series

This is a series of six books designed to help learners improve key job skills. Whether already working or preparing to find a job, this collection will teach learners many ways to improve their skills. The various sections the learner steps through take them from identifying what they already know to how they use their skills in daily life. The six volumes include: Communication, Customer Service, Personal Development, Problem Solving, Time Management, and Writing.
