Peter Gzowski Golf Invitational

This year the PGI Tournament will be held at the Elmhurst Golf and Country Club on June 22, 2009.

To read the entire letter of invitation visit www.mb.literacy.ca, to register click HERE, or to get sponsorship information click HERE.

The PGI golf tournament was one man’s dream to ensure that there was enough support in place so that everyone has an opportunity to learn to read no matter what age they are.

Our goal this year is to have fun, network and raise a lot of money for literacy. The proceeds from this program will support literacy learners in Manitoba.

Register by May 22 to be entered into the early bird draw. The early bird winners – four golfers - will receive an hour of instruction from Elmhurst’s golf pro before the PGI on June 22.

Learner Speakers’ Bureau - Training 2009

Learners improving their public speaking skills. Learners sharing their Stories.

The Learner Speakers’ Bureau is a group of adult learners, trained as public speakers, who go out into the community to tell their stories about the importance of literacy in their lives.

Every year, our Learner Outreach Coordinator conducts a training session for adult learners who wish to improve their public speaking skills. Graduates from the program may join the Bureau and make themselves available for speaking engagements.

This year we have our highest number of registrations in the history of the Learner Speaker's Bureau with one coach for every two learners.

Graduation will be on Friday afternoon April 24, 2009 from 1:30 – 3:30, by invitation only.

LPM provides lunch, bus fair and childcare expenses for each day of training.

Library News

Here are a few items from our collection that may be of interest .

Meals for good health by Karen Graham

This is a great book with tips for eating healthy and learning about the beneficial foods. It includes helpful information for weight loss or maintaining a healthy weight. There are lots of really good recipes –- especially one for rice pudding (my favourite)! More important, learn meal plans that help to manage diabetes and heart disease. “The pictures are so real-looking you may want to eat them right off the pages!”

RoadKill on the information highway by J. William Pfeiffer

What an expansive collection of Canadian trivia and curiosity tidbits! To name a few, topics covered include demographics, social assistance, the best and worst of times, and pensions. “Trying to understand our world from the media is like trying to tell time by looking at the second hand of a watch –- the information is virtually meaningless without the context of the other hands. This book contains 101 specific recommendations that serve as a guide to enhancing the quality of life for all Canadians.”

Allowances dollars and sense by Paul W. Lermitte

Lermitte presents a step-by-step system for teaching children about money. In a friendly and easy-to-read style, he takes you from setting up an allowance to managing loans. He discusses the importance of long-range savings and goal-planning. With the money know-how presented in this book, we can all learn money management skills that will help make us money-smart consumers.
