News on federal funding (August 2007)by Lorri Apps Good news for federally funded literacy organizations - national, provincial and territorial! On August 17, 2007, I participated in two conference calls with Peter Larose, Director General, Workplace Partnerships Directorate, the home of the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills (OLES) and other staff members of OLES. The first call was with the national literacy coalitions. I participated as a member of the executive committee of the Movement for Canadian Literacy (MCL), the national literacy coalition. National organizations will receive 12 to 18 months of funding. During this time, OLES will be working with MCL and with the six funded organizations to develop a plan to reduce the number of national literacy organizations to two or three. The news to provincial and territorial coalitions on the second call was good too. We will continue to be funded. Each coalition will work with OLES to develop a plan for two to three years. The August 21st call for proposals by OLES is open to national literacy organizations, and the provincial and territorial coalitions too as another form of funding.
