LPM hosts literacy conference for learners and instructors

What the world can teach us is the theme of this year's literacy conference on May 4 - 5 at the Canad Inn Fort Garry. Highlights include a historical tour of Winnipeg for learners and a panel discussion of literacy innovations in Manitoba and beyond for practitioners.

At left, LPM staff Rob Sarginson, Connie Bell and Jan Graham plan the learners' tour for the 2007 conference.

Learner speaker training to be held in April

Literacy learners - would you like to learn how to tell others about the importance of learning how to read and write? Literacy Partners is offering training in speech writing and public speaking. After completing the training, Learner Speakers will be given the chance to join the Learner Speakers’ Bureau. As a member you will be asked to speak at conferences, to community groups, and at a variety of literacy events. Joining the Speakers’ Bureau is not a requirement of the training. The main objective is to have fun developing new skills. The training will be held April 19, 20, 26 and 27.

At left, Maria Goncalves, a graduate of last year's learner speaker training and a literacy learner from Open Doors Adult Literacy Program, speaks at LPM's Open House.

Since last September, when LPM first met with election officials, Elections Manitoba has been ruminating on how to use plain language so as to reach the whole Manitoba population. This week, permission was given for LPM to translate some of the voter contact materials into plain language. More...
