Celebrate literacy at LPM's Open House on September 6.

Celebrate International Literacy Day and Literacy Month in Manitoba at LPM's Open House on September 6, 4:30 to 6:00 pm.

In a press release on August 30, the province proclaimed September Literacy Month in Manitoba. “Our government recognizes the impact strong literacy and numeracy skills have on all aspects of people’s lives are drivers for community development,” said Minister of Literacy Diane McGifford.

Once again Ms. McGifford will join us, along with other special guests.

 


Breakfast with the champions on September 10!

On Monday, September 10, 7:30 am, at the Fairmont Winnipeg, Literacy Partners of Manitoba, together with the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, will host the Breakfast of Champions 2007. The Honourable Gary Doer, Premier of Manitoba, will present the third annual Council of the Federation Literacy Award to a literacy learner, Norine Moar of Swan River.


Meet with OLES (The Office of Literacy and Essential Skills) on September 10

Plan to attend an information session with OLES. Mark September 10th, 1:30 pm at the Fairmont Winnipeg (East Ballroom, Mezzanine Floor) in your calendar. Ms Kelly Morrison, Director of Operations, will be providing information about the first call for proposals (posted on Tuesday, August 21, 2007) and responding to your questions. Breakfast with with some more champions - our literacy practitioners - on September 21!

Every two or three months we invite literacy practitioners to breakfast with us at the LPM office. This is a great opportunity to greet old friends and to meet new ones, like those in the picture, to share ideas and concerns and plan together.

ALLS releases Canadian literacy atlas

In 2003, the average prose literacy score for the Canadian population age 16 and over was 272 on a scale ranging from 0 to 500. Prose literacy is defined as the skills needed to understand and use information from texts.

Manitoba's prose scores were not statistically different from the Canadian average.
