Health and Literacy. Can we help you?
Are
you interested in using the “Going to the Doctor” booklet as part of
your teaching materials for next year? If so, LPM will provide you with
a free set of booklets and a manual with lessons and ideas.
As part of LPM’s commitment to improving health services for the learners in Manitoba’s
programs, we offer the revised booklets at no cost to the programs. We
hope that practitioners will use “Going to the Doctor “ in class to
equip their learners with a solid basis for accessing services at
clinics or health facilities.
The booklet was devised in the Yukon
and has been “Manitobanized by LPM (Charles Moody, Joan Mollins, Chris
McInnis). It aims to lower stress levels for low literate users
of the health care system. The lessons help an instructor pre-teach
vocabulary and procedures that will make a visit to the doctor more
effective and less scary for learners.
The
booklet contains descriptions of patient-doctor situations, affirming
statements to support the learner/patient as well as useful scripts,
terminology, and strategies. All go toward helping the learners obtain
clear answers about health issues so that they can control more
effectively their own health care decisions. The instructor’s
manual has many teaching lessons, ideas, and support materials to
develop vocabulary and reduce misunderstandings in a health care
setting.
Both elements of the “Going to the Doctor” kit are available free from LPM, if you call.
