LPM attends post-secondary skills and education summit in Ottawa

Premier Dalton McGuinty of Ontario and Premier Jean Charest of Quebec hosted the day long summit on behalf of the First Ministers. Almost 300 delegates from students to university and college presidents, workers to employers, represented the provinces and territories. Four of these delegates were from literacy coalitions, including Lorri Apps of LPM.

The good news is that Manitoba, including Premier Gary Doer, is recognizing the importance of literacy to the economic health of the province, the health of our citizens, the improved lifestyle that is available with increased literacy, and the list goes on…

At the Summit, Lorri was able to chat informally with the Premier, telling him that we have had the opportunity to speak to several of his cabinet ministers about literacy and the impact low literacy has on their portfolios. Since last fall, LPM has met with Diane McGifford, Greg Selinger, Jim Rondeau, and Christine Melnick. We have a meeting scheduled with Gord Mackintosh in April. We’ve also met informally with other MLAs as the opportunities have presented themselves.
