LPM to hold Open House on September 7 to celebrate Literacy Month in Manitoba

To celebrate Literacy Month in Manitoba and International Literacy Day the following day, LPM will be holding an Open House at their premises at 401-321 McDermot. We invite members and guests to visit us from 5:00 p.m to 6:00 p.m. on September 7, 2006. Minister Diane McGifford will sign the proclamation at 5:15 p.m.

Other important sponsors, including the Winnipeg Foundation, will be represented as well.

Premier to present literacy award at Breakfast of Champions on September 18


Literacy Partners of Manitoba and the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce will host a Breakfast of Champions at 7:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. on September 18 at the Fairmount Hotel, Winnipeg.

At the breakfast, Premier Gary Doer will present the Council of the Federation Literacy Award. This award recognizes the valuable contributions made in the field of literacy, including family, Aboriginal, health, workplace and community literacy. In Manitoba, the award is presented to an adult learner.

Federal statistician to lead discussion of International Adult Literacy Skills Survey

Following the Breakfast of Champions at the Fairmount Hotel, LPM and Adult Learning and Literacy (AL&L) will host an presentation on the International Adult Literacy Skills Survey (IALSS) by Satya Brynk, a statistician with the federal Adult Learning, Literacy and Essential Skills Program. A panel discussion will follow Satya’s presentation. Although there is no charge for this event, people intending to participate must contact LPM at 947-5757 or cbell@mb.literacy.ca


Jim Rondeau to hold annual LIteracy Barbecue and Book Sale on September 23

Once again, Jim Rondeau, MLA for Assiniboia, together with the Optimist Club of Assiniboia and Stevenson-Britannia Adult Leaning Centre will host a barbecue and book sale on Saturday, September 23, at Jim Rondeau's Office, 839A Cavalier Drive, to raise funds for literacy.

Drop off your new or used books and school supplies at Jim Rondeau's office or bring them on Saturday.


LPM to host Literacy Practitioners' Breakfast on September 29

Make sure to attend the first of this year's highly popular literacy practitioners' breakfasts on September 29 at 8:30. This is a wonderful opportunity to make plans, share concerns, and ask LPM to act on those concerns on their members' behalf. Previous discussions have led to real change for adult learners.

The National Literacy Secretariat (NLS) has been generously matching all donations to The Winnipeg Foundation Literacy for Life Fund, dollar for dollar. This support will end on September 15, 2006. Canadian Council on Learning (CCL) calls for manuscripts for new research journal

CCL is launching the Journal of Applied Research on Learning (JARL), Canada's first publication devoted to this topic. The first issue of JARL will appear in April 2007. CCl invites authors of October 31, 2006.
