Alanna's message - spring 2006 The school year is almost complete for our program, and with this comes the hard work required of the literacy working group boards and the practitioners of the programs. You will be busily working to get next years’ programming in place, and with this I wish you luck. On April 19, 2006, a Family Literacy Fun Night was hosted in Brandon. A total of 75 participants attended. The evening kicked off with supper followed by a guest story teller. Judith MacDonald (pictured above) graciously took time from her busy schedule to come and share her story telling gift with the participants. The children in attendance were so enthralled with her stories that they encouraged her to tell them three in total. Each person in attendance was given a “passport” and was encouraged to visit each station. Stations included face painting, story writing centre, bookmark-making centre, a fish pond, cupcake decorating, and a fortune-telling centre. Each of these activities was based around the concept of family learning. The evening ended with door prizes that included Family Literacy T-shirts and various books for the children. A total of 20 door prizes were awarded to the participants. Fun was had by all in attendance. I would like to thank the Family Literacy program PULSE in Minnedosa and Denise Dewar and her staff for having me come in and present two workshops to the families of the program. See you all next year! Watch for further information concerning the Learners’ Conference to be hosted in the fall 2006. Take care! Alanna Hillis
