What a great month for literacy!

September is Literacy Month! Perhaps not officially, but certainly it is if we judge by the number of great literacy events: the premier's presentation of the Council of the Federation literacy award to Faye Belhumeur of Swan River, Minister McGifford's proclamation of International Literacy Day, the MLA Literacy Days, Raise-a-Reader, and others

At the Breakfast of Champions, Premier Gary Doer presents the award to Faye Belhumeur. See below.

Premier presents literacy award at Breakfast of Champions

Premier Gary Doer has presented the first Council of the Federation Literacy Award to Faye Belhumeur of Swan River. She received the award on September 9 at a Breakfast of Champions hosted by LPM and the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce. The premier praised the courage of adult learners like Faye who overcome obstacles to get their education later in life. In an eloquent speech, Faye thanked Carole Didyk and her staff at the Swan River Adult Education Centre for their support. Click here for the full story.

Come to the Literacy Practioners' Breakfast on September 23

We invite literacy practitioners to join us at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, September 23, to meet colleagues, share concerns, and talk about their plans for the year. Please reply to Connie Bell at 947-5757, 1-866-947-5757 or conniebell@mts.net.

MLAs' Literacy Days to be held on September 24.

Jim Rondeau has always been a literacy Champion. On September 24, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Sturgeon Creek Collegiate, Jim and collegue Bonnie Korzienowski will be holding their 5th Literacy Barbecue in support of adult literacy. Drop off your new or used books and schools supplies at Jim Rondeau's office, 839 Cavalier Drive, Winnipeg, or take them to the BBQ. Jim has always challenged other MLAs to join him in supporting literacy.

This year, Theresa Oswald has taken up the challenge. Theresa's commitment to literacy as a highly respected English teacher has extended into her new profession as an MLA and Minister of Healthy Living. Theresa recognises that literacy is a fundamental determinant of health! Theresa's "Bring a Book, Take a Book" community book-swap will be held at the Dakota Community Centre, 1212 Dakota Street, Winnipeg, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sept. 24. Contact 255-7840.
