Raise-a-Reader drive raises record sum on September 29

Three hundred and forty-two volunteers in 21 locations raised $24,055.13 for family literacy. This was $5,000 more than the previous highest amount in 2003. LPM had a personal best as well, raising $1,066 at the corner of Goulet and Tache in St. Boniface. Some of their succss must be attributed to the attention-grabbing antics of the Word Monster.

Pictured at the lucheon after the hard work in the traffic are, from left, Lorri Apps and Raymond Roy of LPM and Cindy Dowse and Alissa Deley of CanWest Global.

As an adult who found success after going back to school, Raymond Roy featured prominently in one of CanWest Global's public service announcements to promote Raise-a-Reader Day. Raymond is a member of LPM's board of directors.

Another adult learner, Daphne Prince, gave a moving speech about overcoming personal difficulties to continue her education at the Aboriginal Learning and Literacy Program. Daphne is a recent graduate of LPM's Learner Speakers' Bureau.
