CanWest Global Raise-a-Reader, Perimeter Airlines, and Manitoba Libraries work together for literacy

Partners join provincial book drive for new and like-new children's books

Throughout 'I LOVE TO READ MONTH in February 2006, CanWest Raise-a-Reader and participating libraries from across Manitoba will be working together for literacy. Together, they will get new and like-new children's books into the hands of literacy programs and agencies in communities in need. Along with other partners, Perimeter Airlines has promised to deliver collected material to remote locations throughout our province.

CanWest Raise-a-Reader will be promoting the month-long event on television and newspapers. Participating libraries will be issued promotional kits and will act as community collection points. As books come in they will be shipped directly to a central collection depot where a massive one-day book sort will take place. With the help of the Manitoba Library Association and its members, the donations will get boxed and labelled, ready for transport to their final destination.

"I'm so proud of all the accomplishments we are making individually throughout Manitoba. Across our province each library is doing amazing work in its community.. and when we all come together on one issue for something like this, I already know it will be an amazing success." says Trevor Surgenor, chief librarian for the City of Thompson and board member of Literacy Partners of Manitoba. Trevor will be available at the Public Library Services conference in Brandon to field any questions. You may also contact him directlyat 204-677-3717.
