Office of Literacy and Essential Skills

On September 4, 2007 the Skills and Employment Branch of the federal department of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) integrated the Office of Literacy and Essential Skills (OLES) into the Workplace Partnerships Directorate. OLES brings together the National Office of Literacy and Learning (NOLL) which was announced in the spring and the Essential Skills Initiative (ESI). More information about OLES.

Adult Language Training Branch, Manitoba Labour and Immigration

Adult Language Training supports the Bilingual Language Coaches for Low Literate Immigrants & Refugees Project. The program is for newcomers to Manitoba who are attending English as an Additional Language (EAL) classes who have less than a Grade 6 education. Immigrants with a good command of English (oral and written) are hired as coaches to work with the newcomers in the EAL class. They explain the context of the lesson rather than acting as translators. The coaches are from nine countries and speak 15 languages.

Adult Learning and Literacy, a branch of Manitoba Advanced Education and Literacy

Adult Learning and Literacy (AL&L)Adult Learning and Literacy (AL&L) provides an annual grant to LPM to run the province-wide LEARN Line.

The referral service assists people who need help or want to help with reading, writing and math. More information about AL&L.

CanWestCanwest is the country’s leading international media company. Its diversified holdings include Canada-wide newspapers, TV and radio stations, a leading film and TV production and distribution operation, and a growing Interactive media business.

Canwest has been a major supporter of LPM over the years. Each year Canwest supports literacy in the Canwest Raise-a-Reader Day.

The Winnipeg Foundation

The Winnipeg FoundationCanada's first community foundation, The Winnipeg Foundation was established in 1921.

Today it hosts 1,500 endowment funds - including the Literacy for Life Fund and LPM's own dedicated Endowment Fund.

To contribute to the LPM Endowment Fund, please contact LPM's Executive Director at 947-5757.

The Winnipeg Foundation has provided financial support to assist LPM to promote literacy and help learners. Currently, The Winnipeg Foundation is helping LPM make written material more accessible to people with low literacy skills. More information about The Winnipeg Foundation.
